We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Solicitor to join our team at The Canadian Bar Association. As a Staff Solicitor, you will play a critical role in providing legal advice and representation to clients on matters related to criminal offenses.
Key Responsibilities:- Work independently on cases of varying levels of complexity as assigned by the Executive Director.
- Attend all levels of Courts in the NWT.
- Travel to remote communities by air for Court Circuits.
- Show Cause in Justice of the Peace Court and Duty Counsel in Yellowknife Territorial Court.
- Prepare all legal documents required for court proceedings.
- Assist with public legal education as instructed by the Executive Director.
- A Law Degree.
- Membership in the NWT Bar.
- Depending on the seniority of the role: Three (3) years of full-time experience as legal counsel practicing in the criminal law area and experience working in a legal aid clinic environment, and experience in managing other lawyers and support staff. Five (5) or more years of full-time experience as legal counsel practicing in the criminal law area and experience working in a legal aid clinic environment, and experience in managing other lawyers and support staff.
This is a full-time, on-site role based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. The successful applicant will be part of a welcoming and friendly community with opportunities for outdoor activities.
