Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Underwriter to join our Care Sector team at Markel Canada Limited. As an Underwriter, you will be responsible for underwriting the relevant line of business within agreed business plan parameters, and in line with underwriting authority, in order to achieve agreed combined ratio targets, while supporting the development and maintenance of a profitable portfolio of desirable business through marketing, analysis, sales, service and underwriting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Underwrite and service a growing book of business, including risk selection, coverage negotiation and pricing adequacy on new and renewable business, all in accordance with designated underwriting authorities and company guidelines.
  • Reviews and processes changes on existing accounts to maintain compliance with policy conditions and company underwriting philosophy.
  • Identify, analyse and develop sources of new business; assists in developing marketing strategies for new or improved products.
  • Partner with peers in other product lines to leverage multi-line opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain superior business and service oriented partnerships with Markel's broker clients through; regular and frequent attendance at client broker events and industry conferences.
  • Maintain market intelligence, business insurance trends and industry knowledge.
  • Provide technical underwriting/marketing of products
  • Confidently and positively demonstrate the discipline of our chosen underwriting approach
  • Effectively balance the demands of underwriting with the challenges of maintaining customer relationships
  • Demonstrate sound and conservative underwriting judgement whilst continuously scrutinizing performance against plan and adjust approach if required
  • Prioritise the team's underwriting strategy and diligently adhere to it at all times
  • Apply appropriate underwriting practices including authority and guidelines control
  • Apply appropriate risk management practices including aggregations and guideline controls and any measures required to limit Markel's exposure
  • Travel to represent Markel as required by Management
  • Actively keep knowledge and skills up-to-date through courses and seminars, where appropriate.

Requirements:
  • Minimum of 2+ years of underwriting experience
  • Successful completion of a university or college level degree
  • Have a detailed understanding of the insurance market
  • Demonstrate strong numerical and analytical ability
  • Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Bilingualism is an asset
