Job Description/Duties: CNC Programmer Responsibilities

CNC Programmer Job Summary:

BWXT Precision Manufacturing Inc. is seeking a skilled CNC Programmer to join our team in Brampton, Ontario. As a CNC Programmer, you will be responsible for creating CNC programs for our shop floor machines and interpreting project drawings to ensure accurate and efficient manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create CNC programs using MasterCam for Brother 3-axis mill with rotary table and STAR high-speed, 2-head, 2-axis lathes.
  • Select tools and fixtures to support CNC programs, designing or selecting any tool, jigs, or fixtures as required.
  • Develop process set-up sheets and tool setup sheets for CNC machined components.
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, and quality teams to ensure manufacturing processes are proven prior to production.
  • Work alongside CNC Machinists to set up machines as needed to meet production schedules.
  • Operate machines to maintain production output alignment with schedules.
  • Perform first-off and in-process dimension checks on production parts.
  • Participate in shop custodial operations, including chip spinning, packing of turning in drums, and general shop cleanliness efforts.
  • Set up, troubleshoot, and/or operate CNC lathe, CNC mill, bandsaw, manual mill, manual drill press, and other power tools.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings to set up parts correctly, ensuring conformity and cycle time requirements.
  • Load programs into CNC machines or transfer CNC programs between CNC equipment.
  • Enhance and follow approved work instructions and drawings provided.
  • Operate CNC Lathe, CNC Mill, manual mill, manual lathe, manual drill press, grinders, and other power tools.
  • Strive for 100% first-time throughput on setups and expedited through the QC department.
  • Perform basic machine adjustments, if necessary (e.g., tool offsets).
  • Read and interpret technical drawings to verify machined parts.
  • Visually or mechanically inspect parts for defects (cracks, chips, dimension, surface finish, etc.) as part of in-process inspection; record results and notify lead/supervisor of deviations as appropriate.
  • Comfortable using various types of micrometers and calipers, height gauge, indicators, edge finders, thread gauges, pin gauges, and bore gauges with master rings.
  • Understand and meet or exceed production and quality standards; minimize reject rate.
  • Follow approved work instructions and drawings provided.
  • Perform simple machine preventative maintenance functions, such as checking coolants, lubricants, and changing filters, etc. Perform minor maintenance on tooling or fixtures as required. Remove cuttings from machines as needed.
  • Keep machines and work area clean; notify supervisor or maintenance when machine abnormalities occur.
  • Possess ability to use computer system for basic departmental transactions.
  • Safely move components with lifting devices such as jib crane or fork-lift.

Administration:

  • Follow all company policies and health and safety procedures.
  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when required.
  • Report any personal workplace injuries to direct supervisor immediately.
  • Report safety issues to direct supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Maintain an acceptable level of performance by following established policies and procedures and participating in continuous improvement efforts by supporting and implementing new ideas.
  • Set a positive example by maintaining a respectful attitude, cooperating with co-workers, management, and internal and external customers.
  • Be a productive team member and help meet established departmental and Company goals.
  • Report to work for your regularly scheduled shifts on time and ready to work.

  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Demonstrate a general knowledge of programming using CAM software to create toolpaths for 2-axis lathe and 3-axis mill.
  • 2-5 years experience in CNC programming for 2-axis lathes and 3-axis mills or have a minimum of three to six years of experience in a similar programming role.
  • Knowledge of Mastercam will be an asset.
  • Knowledge of working in an ISO quality-driven company is an asset.
  • Experience with manufacturing precision-machined components and procedural knowledge of related processes including heat treatment, plating, assembly activities.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills to work within a team-based environment.
