Job Title: Education Assistant - Student Support Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Education Assistant to join our team at School District #62 (Sooke). The successful candidate will provide support to students with autism and special needs, working closely with teachers, inclusive education specialists, and supervisors to implement adapted and modified curriculum.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide individualized support to students with autism and special needs, including behaviour support and learning assistance.
  • Implement adapted and modified curriculum, including lifeskills curriculum and augmentative alternative communication systems.
  • Support students during classroom activities, including transitioning between activities and on field trips.
  • Monitor and record student behaviour, reporting safety concerns and discipline issues to the principal or designate.
  • Assist with personal care needs of students, including glucagon testing, toileting, and feeding.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements:
  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
  • Education Assistant Certification or equivalent in a related field.
  • Minimum three (3) months of experience working with children with autism and special needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development, including developmental milestones in language acquisition.
  • Ability to implement modified and adapted curriculum, including lifeskills curriculum and augmentative alternative communication systems.
  • Basic computer skills, including ability to read and form emails, view word/excel documents, and navigate the internet.
  • Physical ability to respond to student needs, including bolting.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrates patience and acceptance when dealing with students.
  • Shows kindness and cares about the well-being of students.
  • Clearly articulates thoughts and ideas, sharing timely and relevant information openly, honestly, and respectfully.
  • Possesses strong organizational skills, prioritizing and organizing work effectively.
  • Respects the confidential nature of all information relating to students, parents, and staff.
Working Conditions:

The successful candidate will work in a dynamic and supportive environment, collaborating with teachers, inclusive education specialists, and supervisors to provide individualized support to students with autism and special needs.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of child development, including developmental milestones in language acquisition, and be able to implement modified and adapted curriculum, including lifeskills curriculum and augmentative alternative communication systems.

The successful candidate will be required to work in a variety of settings, including classrooms, playgrounds, and on field trips, and will be expected to maintain confidentiality and respect the privacy of students, parents, and staff.
