As a Heavy Duty Mechanic, you will safely operate, repair, rebuild, and perform maintenance on Company-owned or leased heavy-duty diesel and alternative fuel trucks and equipment, ensuring their ability to operate safely. This will enable our Drivers to continue keeping local neighborhoods clean and safe by providing waste removal and environmental services to customers.

A day in the life of a Heavy Duty Mechanic:

  • Arrive at the workstation that services a large fleet of industrial equipment, including all waste and recycling vehicles, off-loaders, skid-steers, and forklifts
  • Meet with your Supervisor and the team to receive assigned tasks for the day, which may involve working independently or alongside other technicians
  • Perform assigned labor tasks, including preventative maintenance, diagnosing and repairing operational difficulties with heavy-duty trucks and equipment, completing reports, work orders, ordering parts, and performing other administrative duties
  • Plan and schedule repairs in M5 planner and procure all necessary parts for successful planning
  • Assist in reviewing mechanical write-ups on equipment and coordinating repair schedules
  • Complete other responsibilities as requested by management
  • Take a hard-earned break mid-shift
  • Attend to service calls as needed or emergent situations in the field
  • Perform afternoon assigned tasks, either continuing tasks from the morning or starting new ones
  • Clean up your work areas and wrap up tasks before heading home to ensure a smooth next day

What's required:

Heavy Duty Mechanics must be able to:

  • Be currently enrolled in a Heavy Duty 3rd or 4th year apprenticeship program or have their Red Seal Certification
  • Be computer literate and have the ability to be trained on software systems and the willingness to learn
  • Meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to Company standards
  • Use diagnostic software (a plus)
  • Follow detailed instructions, work independently, and maintain accurate records
  • Operate any vehicle or equipment necessary to perform the job
  • Possess the physical ability to perform all aspects of the job
