Job Title: Life Skills Youth Peer Supporter

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Life Skills Youth Peer Supporter to join our team at the YMCA of Greater Vancouver. As a key member of our integrated and multi-disciplinary team, you will play a pivotal role in supporting young people aged 12 to 24 years old who are facing challenges such as trauma and social marginalization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish trusting relationships with youth and provide resources, mentorship, and coordination of group activities.
  • Work closely with other team members to achieve pre-established goals and objectives.
  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and organizational initiatives.
  • Develop and lead group services to promote skill development, mental health, and substance use recovery.
  • Provide support to aid with reducing youth's distress, improve or maintain functioning, and enable independence and active participation.

Qualifications and Experience:

We are looking for a candidate with a Diploma in community social services or two years of recent, related work experience with an emphasis on mental health, addictions, homelessness, and/or social services. The ideal candidate will possess strong initiative-taking skills, leadership abilities, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the YMCA's vision and values, as well as an orientation to service. They will possess the following competencies:

  • Leadership/Coaching: Ability to direct and develop performance of others to achieve desired results.
  • Service Strategy: Ability to identify the needs and wants of members/participants as a priority and respond in an effective and timely manner to enhance every person's YMCA experience.
  • Negotiation/Communication/Interpersonal Skills: Ability to speak, write, listen, and secure information in many settings.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to identify an issue, gather and process relevant information, determine possible solutions, select appropriate responses, and implement and evaluate them.
  • Initiative/Enthusiasm/Innovation: Ability to manage and lead to achieve and exceed identified goals.
  • Community Awareness and Understanding: Demonstrates and promotes a personal understanding of and appreciation for the vision, mission, and values of the organization.
  • Self-Management: Ability to appropriately manage one's own emotions and strong feelings; maintain a calm and tactful composure under a broad range of challenging circumstances.
  • Teamwork/Cooperation: Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others within and across organizational units to achieve common goals.
