Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Project Design Engineer to join our team at Planview Utility Services. This individual will be responsible for the design completion and review of aerial pole line projects from concept to final design. The successful candidate will work closely with project coordinators, clients, design technicians, and other engineers to ensure excellent communication and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Project Design Engineer will coordinate work activities with Project Managers, Project Coordinators, CAD designers, survey staff, and other Project Engineers.
  • The successful candidate will design aerial utility outside plant infrastructure in accordance with CSA and ESA standards, including wind and ice loading, separations and clearances, and detailed sag, tension, and pole loading calculations.
  • Civil/Structural engineering skills for buried utility outside plant design in accordance with CSA and ESA are an asset, including trench details and trenchless design.
  • The Project Design Engineer will design minimum required vertical and horizontal separations from other buried utilities.
  • Review, QC, adjust, sign, and seal Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) engineering document deliverables and assemble project deliverable packages.
  • Mentor Junior engineers and/or Engineering Design Technicians as required.
  • Prepare, sign, seal engineering reports, drawings, and documents.
  • The ongoing development of Planview Utility Services' design standards and methodologies to further develop design and operational efficiencies.
Requirements
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, LabView, MATLAB, CAD, and Creo.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to handle multiple projects and conflicting deadlines.
  • Excellent time management.
  • Engineering degree from an accredited educational institution.
  • 2+ years work experience.
  • Knowledge and expertise in structural analysis and design of reinforced concrete structures, structural steel, and wood elements.
  • Knowledge and expertise in SUE is an asset.
  • Minimum CAD skills.
  • Professional Engineer Licensed in the Province of Ontario with a membership in good standing.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with utility companies (i.e. electric, gas, telecom, fibre optic).
  • Experience with municipal/civil infrastructure (i.e. water, storm, sewer).
  • Buried utility outside plant design in accordance with CSA and ESA is an asset.
  • Design reinforced concrete structures such as utility maintenance chambers, pad-mounted interfaces, and retaining walls is an asset.
  • Design structural steel components such as conduit hanger systems attached to bridge structures is an asset.
  • Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) experience is an asset.
  • Consulting engineering work experience.
Work Environment

Planview Utility Services has multiple offices, and this position will be reporting to the Markham office. We offer a hybrid remote work environment, allowing for flexibility and work-life balance.
