About the RoleAs the Head of Software Engineering at Scribd, you will oversee the critical User-Generated Content Division, which encompasses our core document experience and SlideShare teams. This position requires a visionary leader capable of managing multiple engineering teams, enhancing our product development, and ensuring effective collaboration across various functional areas. Your leadership will be instrumental in shaping our monetization strategy, which, while primarily subscription-based, is strategically expanding its focus on advertising to boost revenue streams.
Key Responsibilities- Leadership of User-Generated Content Division: Supervise the engineering teams responsible for Scribd's core document experience and SlideShare. Ensure these platforms effectively support our subscription model while strategically integrating advertising without compromising user experience.
- Strategic Monetization Planning: Work closely with Product Managers to refine and implement a monetization strategy that balances our robust subscription base with the growth of advertising revenues. Innovate and adapt to market changes while maintaining a seamless user experience.
- Cross-Functional Team Collaboration: Promote strong cooperation between engineering teams and other departments, including UX designers, technical program management, and customer support, to ensure that product enhancements align with business objectives and customer expectations.
- Engineering Excellence and Innovation: Actively engage in strategic meetings to advocate for necessary resources, technology stack upgrades, and process improvements that foster a culture of technical excellence and expansion of user-generated content platforms.
- Experimentation and Cross-Functional Initiatives: Lead the development and implementation of experimentation frameworks to systematically test new ideas and features. Collaborate with product managers, business analysts, and data engineering to oversee these experiments, ensuring they are well-designed, executed, and analyzed.
- Talent Management and Team Growth: Drive talent acquisition, development, and retention with strategies focused on proactive recruitment, structured career progression, and continuous training. Implement performance management systems, define clear career paths, and enhance job satisfaction to build a high-performing engineering team.
- Innovation & AI: Leverage innovation across the team to address challenges with creative thinking and utilize AI as a platform to enhance both customer and developer experiences.
- At least 10 years of experience in building and delivering software products.
- 5+ years of engineering management experience overseeing web frontend and backend teams, with at least 2 years of experience managing managers.
- A strong track record of thriving in a customer-focused product development environment, with evidence of contributing to defining and influencing overall product strategy.
- Experience in developing high-scale web and mobile front ends using React and managing large-scale, growing consumer properties.
- An exceptional understanding of technology best practices, application security, and a history of making trade-offs based on current needs.
- Proven experience in scaling a team in high-growth companies, not only in terms of team size but also in developing team member capabilities and skills.
- A history of establishing accountability and success by setting measurable goals and metrics for your teams.
- The ability to set strategic direction while collaborating with senior executives, along with a willingness to engage in hands-on execution with the team.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, high-growth environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and discuss technical concepts, prioritize, and evaluate new ideas with internal and external partners.

- Experience in rearchitecting legacy systems and large-scale technology modernizations focused on platform development.
- Experience with subscription business models or loyalty systems.
- Familiarity with React, Ruby on Rails, and GraphQL.
At Scribd, your base pay is one component of your total compensation package and is determined within a range. Our pay ranges are based on local labor benchmarks for each specific role, level, and geographic location.
We carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining compensation, including but not limited to experience, job-related skill sets, relevant education or training, and other business and organizational needs. The salary range listed is for the level at which this job has been scoped. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for competitive equity ownership and a comprehensive benefits package.
