Job Summary:

The Academic Advisor plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic journey of students at McMaster University. As a key member of the Faculty team, this position requires a high level of expertise in academic advising, recruitment, and student support.

Purpose and Key Functions:

  • Make informed decisions regarding student admissions, registrations, and academic progress.
  • Develop and implement strategies to support students who are not academically eligible to continue in their program.
  • Conduct thorough reviews and evaluations of students' academic records, identifying areas for improvement and providing guidance on course selection and load.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to advocate on behalf of students, ensuring their needs are met and their goals are achieved.
  • Design and deliver academic advising and registration sessions, providing students with the tools and resources they need to succeed.
  • Coordinate grade submissions, authorize grade changes, and maintain accurate records for Faculty-based courses.
  • Develop and present academic plans for students with identified disabilities, advising on appropriate course selection, load, and accommodation requests.
  • Calculate and analyze student data, including sessional and grade point averages, and enrolment statistics.

Supervision:

This role involves ongoing responsibility for supervising up to 9 casual employees at any one time, providing guidance and support to ensure the team's success.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Requires 3 years of relevant experience in academic advising, student support, or a related field.
