Job Description

Job Title: Technical Officer, Optical Spectroscopy

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Technical Officer to join our team at the National Research Council Canada. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and operating advanced optical spectroscopy equipment, performing routine characterization measurements, and assisting in the development of new optical instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Equipment Maintenance: Regularly monitor and validate the performance of optical spectroscopy equipment, including setup, alignment, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Measurement Support: Assist in the preparation of functionalized surfaces suitable for sensor applications with Raman detection.
  • Instrumentation Development: Collaborate with the team to design and construct custom equipment for specialized applications, using state-of-the-art optical components and design software.
  • Lab Operations: Maintain a safe and organized laboratory environment, adhering to safety practices and protocols.
Requirements:
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree or College Diploma in Physics or Engineering with emphasis in optics.
  • Experience: Significant hands-on experience in advanced optics and optical instrumentation, including setup, alignment, calibration, and troubleshooting of complex optical instruments.
  • Skills: Solid knowledge of optics, optical components, and optical equipment; practical knowledge of safety practices for working with compress gases, cryogenic fluids, and electrical, mechanical, and vacuum systems.
Working Conditions:

The working conditions are those in an ordinary analytical laboratory environment with some handling of chemicals, solvents (sometimes requiring a respirator), pressurized gases (sometimes requiring hearing protection), and gas cylinders. Working with small hand/power tools to be expected for equipment modification and construction.
