Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Process Optimization Specialist to join our team at Silgan Containers. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in supporting our Silgan Plastic Operation sites with technical expertise to launch new products and drive continuous improvement projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and commercial teams to apply plastics processing knowledge and evaluate new business opportunities on existing Silgan blow technology machines.
  • Perform blow machine factory acceptance tests (FATs) to ensure safe, quality, and in-spec equipment for new business opportunities, and determine success criteria based on bottle specifications and operational performance requirements.
  • Work with Product Development Engineers to support unit or full set process development for molds and annual evaluation of mold vendors for competitive bid processes.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in reading and understanding product part drawings (bottles, closures, etc.) and specifications to ensure critical features are met.
  • Train Silgan Containers operations and engineering team members on shuttle machine safety, operation, set-up, and troubleshooting, and work with department managers to evaluate skillset gaps and provide training to close gaps.
  • Travel to operation facilities to assist with setup and support of new and continuous improvement process development and production startup.
  • Collaborate with EBM equipment vendors to ensure proper training materials, maintenance, and operations manuals are easy to understand, and spend time at vendor manufacturing sites to train on their equipment and develop internal expertise.
  • Contribute to safety improvements in machine design, operation, and layout, and assist with machine changeovers and troubleshooting as required to support manufacturing operations.
  • Use test equipment for basic bottle measurements, scales, calipers, optical comparators, magna mikes, top load testers, etc.
  • Verify that correct materials are being used and properly prepared, review bill of material documents during new product setup.
  • Support Product Development Engineers and plant teams on new product startups, target process parameters to develop processes for new products, evaluate parts to determine if bottles meet specification requirements, and use data to determine the best process or quantify improvements.
  • Assist in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting of blow machines and ancillary equipment, including material handling and color prep and dosing, and address minor problems in the field and work with plant and service support for major issues.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must possess the following skills and qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of plastics processing and blow molding technology.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to read and understand product part drawings and specifications.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time.
Work Environment

This role will be based in one of our Silgan Containers facilities, with travel required to other locations as needed.
