Product Development Technician Job Description

Grand River Foods, a leading food solutions company, seeks a Product Development Technician to join their team. As a member of the Sunrise Farms family, this role plays a vital part in providing a quality work environment for employees and producing high-quality products for customers.

The successful candidate will be a pleasant professional with good communication skills, be detail-oriented, and highly organized, interacting with various departments, including Sales, Production, Scheduling, Quality Assurance, Procurement, Regulatory Affairs, Suppliers, and Customers.

  • Coordinate new developments or re-formulations to meet customer or company needs from conceptualization to finished product launch.
  • Analyse technical information, write reports, and coordinate with the Product Development team.
  • Develop new formulas, packaging, testing, and sourcing of required materials and suppliers.
  • Collaborate with PD and RA teams to ensure compliance with governing regulations and requirements.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to facilitate new product trials and start-ups.
  • Prepare label copy documents, including combined ingredient lists, nutrient content claims, and health claims.
  • Create cooking instructions for the best possible eating experience.
  • Evaluate new product trials/market samples through sampling and sensory appraisal.
  • Maintain all PD areas in clean and safe condition.
  • Work in a combination of deskwork, lab/kitchen work, and time spent in a refrigerated manufacturing plant.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Post-secondary education in Food Science, Science, Engineering, Culinary, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in R&D/Product Development in the food industry.
  • Meat industry experience preferred.
  • Ability to work closely with Management, Sales, Production, Purchasing, Quality, and RA teams.
  • High proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as Label software and Genesis.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyse data, write reports, and present information.
  • Self-starter with a passion for product development.
  • Creative and flexible to learn and bring new ideas.
  • A car is an asset for travel to other facilities.
  • Willingness to consume and evaluate products, including poultry, beef, pork, seafood, cheese, vegetables, and plant-based meat alternatives.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Detail-oriented and analytical mind set.
  • Ability to work as a team and with minimal supervision.
