Ecological Analyst

This role is part of the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute, working in the Science Centre to support the development and implementation of statistical biodiversity analysis programs across Alberta. The successful candidate will lead statistical exploration, development, and reporting in collaboration with multiple partners, including the academic community, governments, and industry representatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze environmental monitoring data to evaluate trends and relationships with human development activities for various species, focusing on vascular and non-vascular plants.
- Develop and implement new analytical approaches for large biodiversity monitoring datasets.
- Conduct computer programming tasks to clean, store, and analyze data using software such as R, Python, SQL, and Git.
- Provide expertise on the delivery of ABMI monitoring programs, including methods, data collection, and analysis.
- Work with government, industry, and technical representatives to explore the application of ABMI statistical products to planning, policy development, and environmental resource development.
- Produce papers in the scientific literature about the analysis of biodiversity data.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related field in natural resource management.
- Over 5 years of hands-on experience in resource management or related ecological work.
- Strong background in empirical statistical modeling using environmental data.
- Proficiency in R programming for ecological analyses.
- Proven track record of preparing and publishing scientific manuscripts.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary research teams.
- Demonstrated analytical expertise in environmental or ecological studies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in terrestrial ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
- Advanced programming skills, particularly in R, with experience using Git Hub.
- Expertise in modeling species' responses to human activities and disturbances.
- Experience working with large datasets across a diverse range of species and ecological systems.
- Strong research background in community ecology, with a solid publication record.
- Alignment with ABMI's mission, values, and vision, showing a commitment to biodiversity and environmental stewardship.
