At Starbucks, we are seeking a highly skilled Strategic Labor and Employment Counsel to join our team. As a key member of our legal department, you will play a vital role in providing strategic counsel on labor and employment matters to our business leaders and Partner Resources (HR) team.

This role requires effectively conveying legal risk while identifying solutions to achieve business objectives in compliance with our Mission and Values. You will support multiple client groups and provide legal counsel on a wide range of labor and employment matters in Canada and the United States.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Guide - Clearly and concisely provide strategic labor and employment counsel to Starbucks retail operations teams in Canada and those businesses that collaborate with and support the business in the United States.
  • Collaborate - Establish highly collaborative relationships with clients, peers, and external constituents to provide cross-functional support for business clients, including helping paralegals and other support staff to succeed.
  • Be a Trusted Advisor - Help advance business objectives and mitigate risk by acting as a trusted advisor whose strategic thinking, business acumen, pragmatic problem-solving, and proactive counsel are sought out by clients.
Requirements:
  1. At least 12 years of relevant experience practicing labor and employment law in a law firm and/or in-house legal department
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian employment laws and experience counseling business clients on a wide range of employment matters, including discrimination, harassment, workplace accommodations, leaves of absence, performance management, separations, and corporate reorganizations
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian labor laws and experience counseling business clients on a wide range of labor relations matters
  4. General knowledge of United States employment laws and experience counseling business clients on a wide range of employment matters
  5. Significant experience managing labor and employment litigation, including agency charges, arbitrations, grievances, single-plaintiff cases, and class actions
  6. Demonstrated experience overseeing internal investigations alleging unlawful employment actions, wage and hour compliance audits, and/or labor and employment policy reviews
  7. Ability to build interdepartmental relationships at all levels and drive consensus on legal matters among multiple stakeholders
  8. Experience managing outside counsel to ensure efficiency and fiscal prudence
  9. Demonstrated history of challenging the status quo, identifying improvements to mitigate systemic risks, and working with stakeholders to implement solutions
  10. Experience with retail business operations is a plus but not required
  11. Experience and judgment necessary to operate with significant autonomy in advising leaders at all levels from first-line managers to senior executives
  12. J.D. from an accredited law school
  13. Licensed to practice law and an active member in good standing of at least one bar organization in Canada and/or the United States

We offer a competitive salary of $180,000 per year, based on your qualifications and experience. In addition to a comprehensive compensation package, we also offer flexible scheduling and opportunities for paid time off. Our team enjoys a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for up to two days of remote work per week if you live in the greater Toronto or Vancouver area.
