Database Systems Specialist

Reporting to the Software Operations Lead and Senior Database Administrators, you will play a vital role in ensuring the security, availability, and performance of our corporate database management systems. As part of the DBA team, you'll collaborate with developers and contribute to the success of our IT infrastructure.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist Senior Database Administrators in managing and maintaining our database environments, ensuring optimal security, availability, and performance. This includes upgrades, monitoring, improvements, and expansions as needed to meet Manitoba Hydro's objectives.
  • Provide expertise for the development and implementation of new corporate databases, adhering to established standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate effectively with other team members on database-related projects, contributing your technical skills and knowledge.
  • Assist in establishing, reviewing, and maintaining standards for our corporate database environments. Ensure that all database designs align with these standards.
  • Contribute to the design and maintenance of backup, recovery, and restart procedures for our critical databases.
  • Monitor and tune our databases to ensure optimal response times and performance.
  • Provide ongoing support and troubleshooting for our corporate database environments, resolving issues promptly and efficiently.
  • Stay informed about the latest developments in database technology, including software, tools, and techniques. Evaluate new technologies and assess their potential impact on Manitoba Hydro's systems.
  • Ensure strict adherence to Change Management procedures in all aspects of database support.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with other technical teams within Manitoba Hydro.
  • Be prepared for on-call responsibilities, providing system support outside of regular working hours as needed.
Qualifications:
  • A four-year degree in Computer Science from a recognized university with a minimum of two years of direct experience in a DBA support role for major operational Oracle and/or SQL Server database systems.

OR

A two-year diploma in Computer or Information Technology from a recognized institute with a minimum of four years of direct experience in a DBA support role for major operational Oracle and/or SQL Server databases. Demonstrated knowledge of database implementation, maintenance, and administration. Working knowledge of programming within database environments. Familiarity with Microsoft Windows and UNIX/Linux operating systems. Experience with Windows PowerShell and/or UNIX shell scripting. Ability to write clear and concise technical documentation. Proven ability to create professional business reports and documentation. Demonstrated ability to acquire new technical knowledge and apply it effectively in IT solutions. Experience participating in various types and sizes of IT projects. Ability to prepare and deliver presentations. Analytical, self-motivated nature with mature judgment and the ability to make sound decisions. Commitment to staying current with emerging technologies.
