As a key member of the Victoria Shipyards Finance team, the Project Financial Analyst plays a vital role in supporting the Director, VSL Finance, in understanding project financials through financial analysis, forecasting project profit and loss, variance analysis, and financial impacts of contract terms and conditions.

The ideal candidate will have a strong project accounting and compliance background, with experience in an operational environment and the ability to find opportunities to maximize project profitability and cash flow.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working as a business partner with operations to ensure project financials are a useful tool for the team to make business decisions.
  • Building, maintaining, and presenting an accurate Estimate to Complete (EAC) while understanding the financial impacts of all project activity.
  • Reviewing and understanding the terms and conditions of contracts and applying the knowledge to project financials.
  • Reviewing and analyzing project variances between forecast and actuals and providing explanations for a broader audience.
  • Delivering a project revenue forecast in accordance with policies and working with the project team to develop accurate forecasts.
  • Creating and maintaining an accurate cash forecast for projects and analyzing variances to actuals with explanations to a broader audience.
  • Developing, maintaining, and distributing ad-hoc reports and financial models as needed.
  • Driving process improvement and policy development initiatives that impact the function.
  • Attending and adding value to project review meetings with the project teams by communicating financial impacts of current operations and forecasted costs.
  • Implementing and maintaining sound internal controls for the projects, including revenue recognition and reporting of profit and loss.
  • Developing and/or maintaining detailed process and procedure documentation.
  • Assisting project teams in presenting financial information and support for recommendations and decisions.
  • Reviewing subcontractor progress and costs for accurate accruals in revenue and costs.
  • Creating journal entries for accruals and analyzing support for accuracy and timeliness.
  • Reviewing overhead allocations and costs to the projects, ensuring accurate profit and loss.

The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree in Business or Finance, with a preferred Professional accounting designation CPA or MBA. Experience in project accounting and firm knowledge of IFRS and ASPE in regard to revenue recognition are essential. Excellent presentation and reporting skills, including the ability to communicate with others with tact and diplomacy, are also required.
