About the Role:

The University of Toronto Scarborough is seeking a Chemistry Laboratory Technician to provide teaching support services for the undergraduate chemistry laboratories within the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences. As a key member of the laboratory team, you will report to the Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator and contribute to the efficient and successful operations of the undergraduate chemistry labs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with staff and course instructors to determine lab set up requirements
  • Set up lab/workshop according to research and/or course schedules
  • Prepare, assemble, and set up material, equipment, and supplies used in teaching and/or research labs
  • Follow rules and procedural instructions when preparing chemical mixtures and/or solutions
  • Document and maintain standard operating procedures
  • Apply established standards when cleaning lab, rooms, and equipment
  • Ensure the safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials while operating within close proximity to others
  • Serve as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures, and equipment

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum of two years of related job experience working in a laboratory setting, preferably in a post-secondary environment
  • Must be able to operate the following equipment: Balances (both analytical and top-loading types), pH meters, spectrophotometers, ultra sonic baths, hot/stir plates, heating mantels, fume hoods, dishwashers, melting point analyzers, various types of scientific glassware, vacuum pumps, rotary evaporators, micro pipettes, personal computer, photocopier/printer
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 suite applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to details
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team
  • Must have the ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Must have the physical stamina to effectively carry out the duties associated with the position as this position involves a considerable amount of walking and standing on a daily basis and occasional lifting
  • Must have first aid and CPR training, WHMIS, and Chemical Spill Clean-up training or be willing to be trained
