About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse to join our team at Home and Community Care Support Services. As a Mental Health Registered Nurse, you will play a vital role in providing essential health-related advice and support to educators within schools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide medical consultation to educators regarding issues such as medication management for individual students, particularly those with complex medical conditions concurrent with mental illness or addictions.
  • Advise educators on potential side-effects of different classes of medications.
  • Provide support and/or intervention in complex issues such as refusal to attend treatment, self-harm, suicide, or violent behaviour.
  • Support educators to meet the complex medical and mental health needs of students who require extra supports for health and/or safety concerns of self and/or others.
  • Provide the support of a health professional in helping students and/or parent(s) to access services such as primary health care or a children's mental health centre and provide education about options for treatment.
  • Provide essential health-related advice and support to the Mental Health leaders in developing comprehensive board plans to address a collaborative response to the mental health needs of students.
  • Act as a spokesperson as required, and interpret the role of HCCSS to patients, health care professionals, and to the public. Ensure positive public relations and effective co-ordination of services through ongoing liaison and participation on internal and external committees.
  • Participate in establishing, maintaining, and monitoring standards for the Care Coordinators. This includes committee work and active participation and contribution to quality initiatives.
  • Assess for and promote a safe environment for patients, caregivers, family members, and staff. Adhere to health and safety policies/practices developed and implemented by HCCSS.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff, educators, and students within district school boards.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned with service providers and other community partners.
Requirements
  • University degree preferred in Nursing and/or equivalent.
  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Knowledge of the mental health and addictions service system.
  • Recent clinical experience (preferably within the last two (2) years) in providing mental health and/or addictions services.
  • Knowledge of the mental health and addictions service system and recent (preferably within the last (2) years) clinical experience in providing mental health and/or addictions services for children and youth considered an asset.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' recent (preferably within the last two (2) years) experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Solid knowledge of healthcare-related legislation and practices.
  • Proficiency with computerized information systems.
