Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Life Insurance Underwriter to join our Retail Operations team at Empire Life. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for assessing the financial risk of individual life insurance applications and making sound risk decisions to maintain company profitability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess Risk Accurately: Evaluate individual life insurance applications to determine the level of risk and make informed decisions to approve or decline applications.
  • Provide Risk Decisions and Support: Offer expert advice and support to the Sales & Marketing and Retail business line teams to ensure informed decision-making.
  • Assess Mortality and Financial Risk: Analyze financial and medical information to assess the mortality and financial risk associated with individual life insurance applications.
  • Support Sales Team: Collaborate with the Sales team to manage the distribution relationship and provide support in the management of individual life insurance applications.
  • Interact with Reinsurance Providers: Communicate with reinsurance providers to spread risks on retention amounts that exceed the Empire Life retention limit.
  • Consult with Senior Underwriters: Consult with Senior Underwriters, Medical Directors, or the Underwriting Manager on any questionable situations.
  • Participate in Team Projects: Participate as an active team member and lead assigned projects to drive business growth and improvement.
Requirements
  • Bilingualism (English/French): Bilingualism is an asset, but not required.
  • Work Experience: 2+ years of work experience in individual underwriting.
  • Coaching and Mentoring: Experience coaching and mentoring others is highly valued.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, email, internet, and database computer software.
  • Medical and Financial Terminology: Comprehensive knowledge of medical and financial terminology.
  • Analytical and Problem Resolution Skills: Well-developed analytical and problem resolution skills.
  • Decision-Making and Judgment: Ability to be decisive and show consistently good judgment.
  • Coaching and Mentoring Skills: Well-developed coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Organizational Skills: Well-developed organizational skills.
  • Communication Skills: Clear writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Decision Methodologies: Ability to work within and apply decision methodologies.
  • Education: Completion of a university degree in life sciences, nursing, or kinesiology.
  • FLMI and FALU: FLMI with underwriting specialty or working towards is considered an asset, as is working towards FALU.
