Job Summary:

The Workers' Compensation Generalist will perform administrative and complex work involved in the management of Workers' Compensation claims, interacting with internal and external contacts, and exercising judgment and initiative in response to verbal and written communications and in interpreting and applying company-wide policies and procedures.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and submit Workers' Compensation forms and maintain accurate records and statistics.
  • Participate in the review and evaluation of company policies and procedures related to workers' compensation and return to work.
  • Make early contact with injured employees and provide support and understanding to maintain a positive relationship between the company and the injured employee.
  • Maintain communication with supervisors and safety personnel throughout the duration of the claim and in return-to-work planning.
  • Assist injured employees to remain at or return to work as soon and as safely possible after injuries occur.
  • Collaborate with Workers' Compensation & Treatment Providers to prepare and implement rehabilitation and return to work plans for injured employees.
  • Maintain communication with medical service providers and monitor the progress of injured employees' capacity to return to work.
  • Ensure that injured employees modify their work practices to include regular positional changes, required rest breaks, and other recommendations provided by treatment providers.
  • Represent the company at off-site case conferences, job site visits, or other meetings as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience:

  • College or university diploma or certificate in Disability Management, and three to five years' experience in a workers' compensation position, or an equivalent combination sufficient to perform essential functions of this position.
  • Ability to interpret and apply the relevant Provincial Workers' Compensation Acts.
  • Experience working with the Workers' Compensation Board of Nova Scotia.
  • Understanding of medical terminology and familiarity with Functional Abilities Reports and/or Functional Capacity Evaluations.
  • Strong management, planning, and leadership skills, as well as excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to deal with people tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.

The Workers' Compensation Generalist role will involve some field work with a wide variety of other job groups, with a changing work environment.
