Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled immigration and refugee legal consultant to engage in a contract role focused on delivering comprehensive legal support and guidance. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Offering legal counsel and services to clients and partner agency staff on various immigration and refugee law matters, including:
  • Applications for permanent residency based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds
  • Representation in proceedings before all divisions of the Immigration and Refugee Board
  • Temporary resident permits
  • All necessary legal tasks to effectively advocate for clients in courts and tribunals

Documentation and Legal Knowledge
The consultant will also:

  • Prepare and maintain accurate file records as required by the organization
  • Stay informed about poverty law and administrative law to provide effective counsel in legal settings

Community Engagement and Education
In addition to legal services, the role involves:

  • Participating in community development initiatives
  • Conducting public legal education workshops and creating educational materials
  • Engaging with various community organizations and inter-clinic study groups
  • Drafting legal briefs and contributing to law reform efforts
  • Organizing educational seminars tailored for clients and agencies serving similar demographics

Training and Development
The consultant will also be expected to:

  • Participate in both internal and external training sessions
  • Assist in establishing clinic priorities and projects
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures

Work Environment
This position may involve unpredictable work hours, including potential evening and weekend commitments, and requires the ability to manage emotionally charged situations while providing support to vulnerable clients facing legal challenges.

Fluency in both English and another language, along with familiarity with the clinic system, will be advantageous.
