Marine Engineering Manager

The Marine Engineering Manager is primarily accountable for overseeing the daily operations related to the maintenance and engineering needs of all Seaspan vessels. This role entails managing vessel engineering and maintenance operations to align with project timelines and budgetary constraints.
This position is pivotal in shaping company policies and strategies while spearheading the ongoing enhancement of maintenance and repair practices in line with industry trends.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the vessel maintenance program adheres to company standards.
- Lead the port engineering team effectively.
- Coordinate responses to unexpected maintenance issues for Seaspan vessels.
- Organize scheduled maintenance tasks for the fleet.
- Develop and manage the approved annual maintenance and engineering budget.
- Collaborate with the Operations Manager to prepare and present annual financial plans.
- Oversee capital projects involving modifications and enhancements for the existing fleet.
- Plan and execute docking operations for the fleet.
- Strategize crew assignments for onboard engineers.
- Formulate and implement a class-approved maintenance program along with a policy and procedure manual for newly integrated vessels into the fleet.
- Supervise the port engineering team to ensure compliance with the maintenance program.
- Work closely with the Operations and Commercial Managers to guarantee adequate training for all crews and stakeholders.
- Provide leadership to the team, emphasizing safe operations and minimizing lost time injuries. This includes offering guidance and training to uphold standards, implementing succession plans, and ensuring adherence to union agreements, workplace safety regulations, and health protocols.
- Investigate all machinery and equipment failures to identify root causes and recommend preventive measures. Consult with internal and external experts to address unusual incidents involving vessel structures, machinery, and equipment.
- Assist in the preparation and monitoring of the annual budget for vessel maintenance and repairs, as well as capital expenditures related to new vessels during their integration and operational phases.
- Stay informed about new construction techniques, propulsion technologies, and regulatory changes that may affect operations. Represent Seaspan at maritime conferences.
- Attend shipyard and manufacturer facilities during Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and commissioning phases when authorized.
- Provide technical support for Seaspan projects as necessary, including planning, workforce requirements, material needs, and scheduling. Offer assistance in contract negotiations for collective agreements concerning shipboard personnel.
- Ensure familiarity with company policies and all relevant legislation and statutory requirements regarding employment and workplace safety.
- Participate in hands-on maintenance activities as required.
- Perform additional responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
- A post-secondary degree in a relevant field or successful completion of an apprenticeship program qualifying the individual as a Power, Stationary, or Marine Engineer.
- A Marine Certificate of Competency is preferred.
- At least 6 years of supervisory experience in progressively senior roles within a mechanical repair environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Supervisory or management training is advantageous.
- Strong technical skills with the ability to interpret complex technical specifications and drawings.
- Knowledge of vessel hull, machinery, and equipment repair.
- Understanding of all applicable legislation, acts, and regulations governing marine operations.
- Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and exercise sound judgment under pressure.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficient in project and program management.
- Capability to lead and inspire team members, earning their respect and trust.
- Ability to mentor, train, and share knowledge with other team members.

The estimated salary for this position ranges from $135,000 to $165,000. The final salary will be determined based on various factors, including the candidate's skills, experience, position location, and internal equity, and will be presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
