Qualifications and Requirements

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Respiratory Therapist to join our team at Island Health. To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • A graduate degree from a recognized Respiratory Therapy education program;
  • Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) certification;
  • Certified Respiratory Educator (CRE) designation, including completion of courses in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Asthma, and Education for Chronic Disease;
  • Current CPR level C or BLS HCP certification;
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in respiratory care, with at least 1 year in community and/or outpatient care;
  • Specific training and practice in pulmonary rehabilitation, asthma education, respiratory home care, home ventilation, and sleep disorders;
  • Knowledge of current technologies and treatments for acute and chronic respiratory conditions, such as pneumonia, COPD, and asthma;
  • Experience in policy/procedural development and quality improvement initiatives;
  • Current membership or eligibility for membership in the B.C. Society of Respiratory Therapists;
  • A valid BC driver's license.

  • Ability to initiate and lead processes;
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with clients, caregivers, families, physicians, hospital staff, and community agencies;
  • Decision-making and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team;
  • Ability to plan, organize, set priorities, and follow through;
  • Proficiency in using a computer;
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
