About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Strategic Indigenous Policy Advisor to join our team at the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. As a key member of our Indigenous Policy and Programs Unit, you will play a critical role in advancing reconciliation and awareness of Indigenous issues and concerns.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic advice and expertise to the Ministry on building relationships with Indigenous peoples and supporting engagement and consultation with Indigenous communities on policy and program development.
  • Develop and implement new/revised programs and policy to enhance participation of Indigenous partners and facilitate the application of an Indigenous inclusion lens to policy and program development.
  • Plan, lead, facilitate, or participate in consultations and engagements with Indigenous communities and organizations, including the development of agreements for relationship funding, consultation, and engagement.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of the issues facing Indigenous communities in Ontario and an ability to gain the knowledge of and understand the implications of Ontario's corporate Indigenous policies, frameworks, and related Ministry policies, practices, standards, and legislation.
  • Excellent communication skills to develop and maintain effective and positive working relationships with Indigenous communities, as well as internal and external stakeholders.
  • Well-developed relationship management skills to consult effectively with Indigenous communities and organizations, as well as internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to demonstrate judgement and discretion to provide expertise and advice to Ministry decision-makers and senior management regarding emerging/anticipated major and/or contentious issues to facilitate effective and timely decision-making.
