Job Summary

The Surgical Day Care team at Halton Healthcare requires a Registered Practical Nurse with strong surgical experience to assist with operational growth within the surgical program.

As an active member of a multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will provide patient-focused care in the outpatient environment, collaborating with other healthcare professionals in the planning and implementation of care for a wide variety of surgical cases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality patient care in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to plan and implement care
  • Assist with pre and post-operative care, including orthopedic same-day total joints
  • Administer medications and perform various nursing procedures
  • Function independently within the scope of practice
  • Maximize utilization of resources
  • Participate in continuing education and learning opportunities

Requirements

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current BCLS Certification
  • Recent experience with ophthalmology pre and post-op
  • Experience with orthopedic patients, especially total joint replacements
  • Knowledge of pain management
  • Experience with Acute Pain Service
  • Experience with regional anesthesia
  • CVAD experience
  • Strong skills in IV insertion
  • Required skills include aseptic technique, wound care, ostomy care, CBI care, foley catheter insertion and management, IV care and management
  • Experience in medication administration
  • Organized and able to work in a team environment
  • Self-directed
  • Demonstrates strong critical thinking skills
  • Caring, compassionate, and patient and family-centred
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment
  • Sound knowledge of nursing process, theory, and responsibilities to the profession
  • Sound problem-solving, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills
  • Functions independently within the scope of practice
  • Maximizes utilization of resources
  • Evidence of continuing education/learning
  • Aware of multicultural issues affecting healthcare needs
  • Basic computer skills - Order Entry module of Meditech
  • Familiarity with Smarttrack (OR Manager)
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position
  • Satisfactory employment and attendance record
