About the Opportunity
The City of St. John's is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Aquatic Program Instructor to join our team at the Paul Reynolds Community Centre and the Mews Community Centre. As a Lifeguard Instructor, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our patrons while delivering high-quality aquatic programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure adherence to all rules and regulations related to aquatic and other program activities.
- Deliver instructional programs, including swimming lessons and water safety education, in accordance with Red Cross and Recreation Division standards.
- Maintain direct contact with patrons, communicating effectively and providing excellent customer service.
- Monitor pool areas, check change rooms, shower areas, and steam/sauna areas during aquatic activities.
- Ensure a safe aquatic environment at all times, including securing the pool area when not supervised.
- Maintain the cleanliness of pool deck areas, lifeguard rooms, and change rooms, and ensure equipment is stored properly.
- Complete and submit necessary forms and reports, such as progress cards, test sheets, and statistical reports.
- Report any difficulties, incidents, or complaints to the Head Lifeguard immediately.
- Maintain current aquatic qualifications necessary for the position.
- Have full knowledge of Aquatic Emergency Procedures and ensure all emergency equipment is available and operational.
- Perform setup and breakdown of activities for various aquatics programs and equipment.
- Attend in-service training and staff meetings as required.
Requirements
- Minimum of 16 years of age, as required under Public Pool Regulations.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C.
- Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard award.
- Current Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor Certificate.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public, coworkers, and supervisors.
Working Conditions
Aquatic conditions may be very hot and humid at times. Considerable time may be spent in the water swimming, teaching, training, or performing rescues. Frequently dealing with members of the public and a team of staff. Flexible hours of work, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
Physical Requirements
Walking, standing, lifeguarding, instructing, and maintaining focused attention and proper vigilance for extended periods. Moderate physical effort when teaching swimming lessons or participating in training or certification programs. Lifting and handling of equipment, such as moving/lifting teaching platforms, lane ropes, and other pool equipment. Lifting and aiding swimming lesson participants as per Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor standards. Completion of rescues and provision of first aid as per National Lifeguard and industry standards, which may require intense physical effort at times.
