About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a community-driven environment where you will have the chance to make a real difference in the lives of individuals and families. As a Social Worker, you will establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with Metlakatla First Nation staff and representatives of other departments, health and community support teams, and external agencies.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Build trusting relationships with individuals and families within the community to assess needs and provide appropriate supports and services.

  2. Provide culturally competent counseling and crisis intervention, respecting traditional healing practices and local protocols.

  3. Develop and implement care plans and support strategies, collaborating with health teams, Elders, and community leaders.

  4. Educate clients on the purpose, services, and requirements of the Social Development Program.

  5. Facilitate access to community resources, social programs, housing support, and mental health and addiction services.

  6. Conduct home visits, needs assessments, and risk assessments to evaluate the wellbeing and safety of individuals and families.

  7. Coordinate and deliver culturally relevant workshops and group support sessions focused on mental health, family relationships, and community wellbeing.

  8. Maintain secure files, including case notes, identification, and required documentation, in accordance with programming policy and privacy requirements.

  9. Report regularly to the Executive Director on member progress.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in social work; a master's degree is an asset.

  • Registration (or eligibility for registration) with the British Columbia College of Social Workers (BCCSW).

  • At least two years of social work experience, with direct experience in First Nations communities strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of First Nations governance, rights, and the impact of colonialism on Indigenous communities.

  • Experience liaising with government agencies and systems.

  • Training in trauma-informed care, cultural safety, and/or Indigenous-focused social work is an asset.

  • Valid BC driver's license that is in good standing.

  • Current clear criminal record check including vulnerable sector clearance.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able and willing to complete home inspections.

  • Some travel throughout the community is required.

  • Must take and pass a drug-free clearance test prior to the job being offered and intermittently at the employer's request.

  • Must pass a pre-employment physical as required by this employer prior to the job being offered.
