Program Overview

Northern Health Authority is offering a unique training opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. This program is designed to provide participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to become a certified Care Aide.

Program Details
  • The program will involve completing the Health Care Assistant certification program at a post-secondary institution with tuition paid for by the Ministry of Health.
  • Participants will be paid a stipend of $24.80 per hour for 37.5 hours per week while studying.
  • The program takes approximately 10.5 months to complete.
  • Upon successful completion, participants will be registered with the BC Care Aide/Community Health Worker Registry and will commence employment as a Care Aide in the Long Term Care sector.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof in the form of the BC Vaccine Card.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Residency status in Canada.
  • Must complete a Criminal Record Check (CRC) for working with children and vulnerable adults.
  • Must possess a valid BC Drivers License and reliable vehicle for business purposes (only required for Home Support sector).
  • Must meet the College admission requirements for the Health Care Assistant Program in a timely manner.
  • Must sign a 12-month return of service (ROS) agreement.
  • Must sign the Health Care Support Worker Certificate Program Waiver.
  • Must pass an English proficiency test within the last 24 months if English is a second language or if educated outside of Canada.
  • Must not be currently performing a Health Care Aide role and have not previously completed the HCA program in BC.
Program Benefits
  • Participants will receive a stipend of $24.80 per hour for 37.5 hours per week.
  • The Ministry of Health will pay the tuition and fees directly to the college.
  • Participants will receive a one-time $342 stipend to assist with the costs of pre-requisite courses and necessary books.
Program Requirements
  • Participants must have a personal laptop/computer and a reliable internet connection.
  • Participants must be able to travel and may be required to stay overnight for class, labs, or clinical placements.
Post-Program Requirements
  • Participants must apply for registration with the BC Care Aide/Community Health Worker Registry promptly upon receiving confirmation of completion.
  • Participants must immediately apply on vacancies and accept a Community Health Worker position as required under the Return of Service Agreement.
