Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Peer Support Specialist to join our team at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will play a critical role in providing support and guidance to clients living with HIV/AIDS, mental illness, and substance use disorders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, providing consistent and proactive engagement to support their recovery and well-being.
  • Assist clients in accessing health and social services, including primary care, mental health, and addiction treatment.
  • Accompany clients to appointments and schedule follow-up appointments as needed.
  • Liaise and coordinate with research teams to improve clinical follow-up and retention.
  • Outreach to clients via public transit or walking on foot to provide support and services.
  • Participate in events relevant to client goals and community engagement.
  • Provide education and support to clients on their consumer rights and grievance procedures within the healthcare system.
  • Assist clients with community integration activities and escort them to appointments as per healthcare team planning and collaboration with the client.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to identify client goals and develop care plans.
  • De-escalate situations and call in outside resources as needed.
  • Use electronic charting systems to update client files and book appointments.
Requirements
  • Recent, related work experience with an emphasis on mental health, addictions, homelessness, and/or social services.
  • Experience in community social services or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a downtown environment and be flexible and creative in providing services.
  • Ability to identify and work to increase client strengths, including the use of hope-inducing strategies and assisting the client in self-managing their illness and other aspects of their life.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a transdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to establish workload priorities, adjust to new or unexpected events, problem-solve, and deal effectively with conflict situations.
  • Knowledge of primary health care and care provision by an interprofessional team.
  • Knowledge of principles of community integration for people living with mental illness and other barriers to healthcare.
  • Knowledge of the principles of recovery in mental illness and problematic substance use.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles and activities.
