The primary objective of this role is to spearhead the strategic direction of the Environmental product line, ensuring alignment with profitability targets set forth by the organization. This position entails the development, communication, and execution of goals and objectives in collaboration with the Senior Vice President - Underwriting. The incumbent will provide leadership, guidance, coaching, and mentorship to the environmental underwriting teams, facilitating the implementation of best practices across the board.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
- Serve as a vital member of the Markel Canada Underwriting leadership team.
- Formulate and drive the strategy for Environmental products in partnership with key stakeholders.
- Develop and execute financial and operational plans in conjunction with the President/DMD, SVP Underwriting, Finance, and Regional teams.
Operational Excellence:
- Uphold product line-specific technical pricing standards and underwriting authority within the Environmental domain.
- Establish underwriting standards and strategic direction for the Environmental product line.
- Supervise account referrals exceeding field underwriting authority, ensuring consistency and excellence in execution.
- Identify new market opportunities and product offerings while supporting cross-selling initiatives based on client needs.
- Manage the Environmental product through ongoing Portfolio Management, providing clear underwriting direction to field teams.
- Organize and conduct product line-specific training for underwriters and support personnel.
- Review accounts that exceed assigned authority levels.
- Relay feedback and concerns to Senior Leadership regarding product, underwriting, and claims issues.
- Collaborate with Claims, Actuarial, and product leaders for comprehensive results analysis.
- Oversee gross and net line guidelines.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in insurance underwriting and leadership, with at least 5 years focused on Environmental underwriting.
- Familiarity with actuarial functions.
- An undergraduate degree is preferred; advanced degrees or industry designations are advantageous.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- A collaborative approach with strong relationship-building capabilities.
- Proven strategic thinking skills with the ability to lead transformational change.
- Experience in influencing key stakeholders and leaders effectively.
- High energy and a proactive self-starter with a strong sense of urgency.
- Demonstrated success in setting and achieving objectives while gaining buy-in from leadership and peers.
- Flexibility and spontaneity are essential for success in this role.
- Strong interpersonal skills to achieve desired outcomes and interact effectively, coupled with confidence, integrity, and enthusiasm.
- Willingness to travel as required.
