About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join our team at Scotiabank. As a key member of our Legal Department, you will provide expert legal advice and counsel on pension, employee benefits, and compensation plans, as well as related employment law matters.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide High-Quality Legal Advice: Offer expert and high-quality legal advice and counsel on pension, employee benefits, and compensation plans, as well as related employment law matters to ensure business results are met in accordance with legislative guidelines and Scotiabank's overall governance.
  2. Contribute to Business Success: Contribute to the overall success of the Bank's Legal Department in Canada, ensuring specific individual goals, plans, and initiatives are executed/delivered in support of the team's business strategies and objectives.
  3. Champion a Customer-Focused Culture: Champion a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
  4. Recommend and Communicate Advice: Recommend and communicate high-quality and valued advice and counsel on a broad range of legal matters related to pension, employee benefits, compensation, and equity plans, employment law, and the application of Bank policies and practices that impact these areas.
  5. Provide Legal Support on M&A Transactions: Provide legal support on M&A transactions as required.
  6. Develop and Maintain Relationships: Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal business units.
  7. Understand Risk Appetite and Risk Culture: Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  8. Actively Pursue Effective Operations: Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to, and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk, and conduct risk.
  9. Champion a High-Performance Environment: Champion a high-performance environment and implement a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops, and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vision/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.
Requirements
  1. Graduate of a Recognized Law School: Graduate of a recognized law school.
  2. At Least 8 Years of Experience: At least 8 years of private practice or in-house experience with expertise in all areas of Employment Law.
  3. Membership in the Law Society: Membership in the law society of one of the provinces of Canada.
