POSITION TITLE: Bus Driver
EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-exempt
REPORTS TO: Transportation Manager
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 months; school year
HOURLY SALARY RANGE: Bus Driver (fully certified w/endorsements) - Minimum $20/hour;
Bus Driver in Training - $13.93/hour
Primary Purpose:
To guarantee the secure and organized transport of students along designated routes or trips. Operate a school bus that conveys students and other authorized individuals to and from educational institutions and other specified locations.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License with all necessary school bus driving endorsements
Bus Driver Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills
Must be at least 18 years of age
Capability to pass alcohol and drug tests
Ability to complete mandatory bus driver safety training
Proficiency in operating a bus
Effective communication skills and ability to follow both written and verbal instructions
Understanding of student discipline protocols and ability to manage student behavior
Experience:
Proven experience as a driver with a clean driving record
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Vehicle Operation
Adhere to assigned routes and established schedules. Drive the bus to and from extracurricular activities as required. Inspect the bus for mechanical issues before and after each operation and inform the supervisor of necessary repairs. Report all incidents, vehicle damages, student injuries, and mechanical failures, completing all required documentation. Maintain records of bus mileage, fuel consumption, and number of passengers transported. Ensure the assigned bus is clean and properly fueled. Be prepared to work irregular hours as necessary.Student Management
Oversee students while they board and disembark from the bus and cross the street, ensuring all students exit the bus at the end of the route or trip. Educate students on safe riding practices and regulations. Communicate daily with teachers and parents regarding student behavior. Maintain discipline and report any student discipline issues to the appropriate administrator.Safety
Comply with all traffic laws and safety regulations applicable to school buses. Conduct a thorough inspection of the bus, checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure safe operation before driving. Ensure the proper condition of emergency equipment, including first aid kits, fire extinguishers, flags, fuses, crowbars, and reflectors. Correct any unsafe conditions in the work area that could lead to accidents and promptly inform the supervisor of any unresolvable issues. Report any hazardous conditions encountered along the route.Communication
Utilize two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office. Promote positive relations within the school community and among all school personnel.Professional Growth and Development
Attend and complete all required training programs to maintain safety certification. Engage in professional development, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
