The Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) serves as a pivotal entity in the realm of urban development across Canada. It functions as a collaborative platform uniting policymakers, urban professionals, advocates, and scholars from various backgrounds to foster vibrant and equitable urban communities. CUI is an innovative organization that proactively addresses challenges in urban settings, having expanded its initiatives and workforce significantly in recent times.
Role Summary
CUI is in search of a seasoned Chief Operating Officer to assist the President and CEO along with senior management in establishing a dynamic national institute aimed at enhancing urban life throughout Canada.
The Chief Operating Officer will leverage their extensive experience to manage all operational facets of the organization, ensuring the design and optimization of systems and programs necessary for CUI to achieve its nationwide objectives.
Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Chief Operating Officer is expected to be an effective leader with exceptional interpersonal skills, comprehensive organizational management experience, robust project and financial management capabilities, and a deep understanding of urban issues both domestically and internationally. Proven leadership in promoting systemic equity within organizations and broader program frameworks is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the daily operations of the organization and its personnel, including program design and execution, human resources, IT support, marketing, and finance.
- Collaborate closely with the President & CEO and the executive team to realize the organizational vision and strategic plan as sanctioned by the Board.
- In partnership with the Finance Team, plan and manage the annual budget, track monthly performance, and ensure a sustainable revenue stream.
- Support project managers in ensuring that individual projects meet their financial and operational goals efficiently.
- Foster a positive organizational culture by developing and implementing equity-focused employment and administrative policies.
- Work alongside senior staff to recruit, mentor, and retain talent.
- Establish evaluative processes for organizational accountability, performance, and professional growth.
- Build and maintain relationships with external organizations to strategically enhance CUI's mission.
- Maintain communication with funders, sponsors, and supporters.
- Provide regular operational updates to the Board as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the President & CEO.
Required Experience:
- Proven experience in a senior leadership role within the private, public, community, or non-profit sectors.
- Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning and program development.
- Familiarity with best practices in non-profit management, human resources, and performance evaluation.
- Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation and analysis.
- Experience with organizational governance, contract management, and compliance.
- Exceptional organizational skills, including planning, delegation, and program development.
- Ability to apply an equity lens to all aspects of work.
- Experience in high-pressure environments and a collaborative work style.
- Proven ability to build relationships with influential individuals and organizations.
- Experience working with a Board of Directors.
- Knowledge of data analysis and operational metrics.
- Proficiency in IT infrastructure and MS Office.
- Fluency in both English and French is an asset.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 10 years of senior management experience in relevant sectors.
- A bachelor's degree or higher in business, economics, finance, management, or a related field.

Work Environment:
