Job Title: Education Support Specialist

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Education Support Specialist to join our team at School District #62 (Sooke). As an Education Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting students with diverse needs, including autism, behaviour disorders, learning and physical disabilities, syndromes, and disorders that affect learning.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support students in a variety of classrooms, including those with students with autism, behaviour disorders, and learning and physical disabilities.
  • Implement adapted or modified curriculum, as needed, to support students with diverse learning needs.
  • Prepare visual supports and implement low-tech communication systems to support students with communication needs.
  • Implement augmentative and alternative communication systems to support students with complex communication needs.
  • Support students with daily living skills, including feeding, dressing, toileting, and mobility.
  • Implement daily exercise programs under the direction of an occupational therapist or physiotherapist.
  • Support students with social inclusion in the classroom and on the playground through implementing self-regulation strategies, behaviour support strategies, communication strategies, and monitoring behaviour.
  • Objectively observe and record student behaviour, as required.
  • Report safety, unusual behaviour, and discipline concerns to the principal or designate.
  • Support personal care needs of students, including glucagon testing, toileting, and feeding.
  • Attend to minor cuts or bruises and refer students to the first aid attendant as required.
  • May be required to physically assist students using lifts and transfers.
  • May be required to support transferring students on and off buses.
  • Remain current in school, district, and provincial policies and guidelines relevant to the role.
Requirements:
  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
  • Education Assistant Certification or equivalent in a related field or equivalent experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Minimum three (3) months of experience working with children.
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development.
  • Familiarity with Individual Education Plans and Individual Care Plans an asset.
  • Ability to implement modified and adapted curriculum.
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to read and form emails, view Word/Excel documents, navigate the internet, and use web-based applications.
  • Physical ability to respond to student needs.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrates patience and acceptance when dealing with students.
  • Shows kindness and cares about the well-being of students.
  • Actively shows courtesy and respect to all, proactively builds healthy and trusting relationships with all, and contributes to a positive working environment.
