Position Overview
The Director of Care (DOC) is responsible for leading, planning, organizing, and supervising the activities of the Clinical Team to cater to the distinct and individual needs of our residents, thereby enhancing their quality of life. The DOC plays a crucial role within the inter-professional management team and is accountable for the nursing and personal care that facilitates resident-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety and privacy of residents in a homelike environment, empowering them as partners in their care while supporting families in their essential roles.
- Participate in the Multidisciplinary Leadership Team to ensure high-quality programs, services, and care.
- Act as a strong role model, aligning actions with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
- Oversee the provision of quality resident care through effective delegation to clinical managers and the Associate Director of Care.
- Maintain effective management systems, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and organizational standards.
- Allocate, utilize, and evaluate resources effectively.
- Manage funding to develop and enhance an effective model of care.
- Delegate duties and responsibilities appropriately among regulated and personal support care staff.
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures that reflect the organization’s philosophy, values, goals, and objectives.
- Coordinate a streamlined multidisciplinary system for admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Ensure that services procured from external sources meet required safety and quality standards.
- Oversee the maintenance of effective documentation systems and procedures.
- Lead the implementation of clinical quality improvement and risk management strategies.
- Facilitate strong relationships with representatives from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, LHIN, OHT, Home and Community Care, and other external agencies.
- Engage in labor relations, negotiations, and grievance meetings as necessary.
- Promote the advancement of nursing knowledge and the application of research data.
- Serve as the primary contact for resident physicians and ministry representatives.
- Participate in or lead various committees focused on quality management and program planning.
- Perform all duties in accordance with relevant legislation and the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Assist in interpreting policies and standards set by legislative and regulatory bodies.
- Collaborate with HR and clinical leadership to interview, hire, and develop clinical staff.
- Participate as a member of the Leadership Team and share on-call responsibilities with other team members.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned by the Administrator or their delegate.
Qualifications
- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing (Master's degree preferred).
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- 5+ years of nursing supervisory experience, preferably in long-term care.
- Thorough knowledge of standards established by the Ministry of Health and the College of Nurses.
- Exceptional leadership and team-building abilities.
- Proficient in computer applications, including Point Click Care and Microsoft Office.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of preparing policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage staff delivering various levels of nursing and resident-centered care.
- Ability to work independently and demonstrate effective decision-making and time management skills.
- Self-motivated and results-oriented, with a focus on executing initiatives efficiently.
- Capacity to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with residents, staff, and external service providers.
- Ability to foster an environment conducive to the well-being of residents and staff.
