Position Overview: As a Building Engineering Supervisor, you will report directly to the Manager of Building Engineering. Your primary responsibility will be to efficiently oversee and direct the Building Engineer staff. You will serve as a vital resource, providing technical guidance, recommending policies, and ensuring that permit applications are reviewed and issued in compliance with the Ontario Building Code and other relevant regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assume the duties of the Manager of Building Engineering in their absence.
  • Collaborate with the Building Division leadership team to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Prepare work schedules, assign tasks, and monitor staff performance, including training and disciplinary actions.
  • Conduct regular audits of permit applications, approved drawings, and other Building Division functions to ensure adherence to established procedures.
  • Provide training and mentorship to Building Engineers on building code compliance, technical standards, and municipal by-laws.
  • Investigate and resolve complex issues related to the Building Code and engineering practices.
  • Perform site inspections and visits to assess compliance and address concerns.
  • Engage with the public, contractors, and professionals to clarify regulatory requirements and mediate disputes.
  • Assist in the interpretation of regulatory requirements for Plans Examination and Building Inspections staff.
  • Conduct plan examinations and issue building permits for significant development projects.
  • Draft and review reports regarding unsafe buildings and other technical matters.
  • Represent the City on various technical committees and bodies.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess progressively responsible experience in building inspections, along with a degree in a related field or equivalent experience. A thorough understanding of current construction practices, the Ontario Building Code, and Zoning By-laws is essential. You must be eligible for appointment as an inspector under the Ontario Building Code Act and have the following qualifications:

  • General Legal Process
  • On-site Sewage Systems
  • Building Services
  • Building Structural

Skills: You should have strong analytical and business planning skills, with the ability to oversee the work of others to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering technical training and presentations is also required.
