Role OverviewThe Sustainable Energies Group (SEG) at CPP Investments integrates the organization’s expertise in renewable energy, conventional energy, and innovative technology and service solutions, positioning CPP Investments as a leading global energy investor. SEG manages approximately $32 billion in assets, making it competitive and adaptable in the dynamic global energy sector.
SEG capitalizes on expanding market opportunities as the energy sector transforms and global power demand escalates, particularly for low-carbon energy alternatives. The group maintains a diversified portfolio primarily consisting of long-term tangible assets, including renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydro, alongside conventional power, upstream oil & gas, energy midstream, and carbon capture. It also invests in innovation, technology, and services for the energy industries and manages agricultural investments.
The Analyst will assist in developing and executing the Sustainable Energies Group strategy and driving investment outcomes:
- Support the execution of new investment opportunities focusing on North America
- Assist in asset management in North America, enhancing the competencies of the Sustainable Energies Group team
- Collaborate effectively with team members, investment committees, and other divisions of CPP Investments
- Participate in a global team, engaging in strategic initiatives and staffing models
- Act as a strong culture carrier within the Sustainable Energies Group, embodying CPP Investments' guiding principles and the core principles of innovation, collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect
The Analyst will have the opportunity to demonstrate and develop the following competencies:
Deal Execution
- Strong capabilities in deal execution, with the ability to liaise with external advisors (particularly investment banks) and coordinate deal processes
- Ability to concurrently research, analyze, and evaluate various sustainable energy investment opportunities, including conducting due diligence on past and projected financial performance, management quality, investment merits and risks, expected returns, regulatory environments, industry dynamics, and other pertinent factors
- Experience in reviewing third-party due diligence reports (accounting, industry strategic reviews, environmental, etc.)
- Experience in engaging with prospective companies' management to review past performance, strategy, outlook, regulatory and industry issues, and other relevant topics as necessary
Asset Management and Value Creation
- Monitor ongoing financial and operational performance of existing Sustainable Energies Group investments, supporting day-to-day execution
- With assistance from the Sustainable Energies Group and Portfolio Value Creation teams, identify and contribute insights to the team's value creation efforts (including execution plans)
Team Building, Development, and Engagement
- Build and manage relationships with CPP Investments' internal teams and portfolio companies' management
- Demonstrate interpersonal effectiveness in managing upwards and establishing relationships with team members
- Participate in and contribute to weekly Sustainable Energies Group meetings
Strong Culture Carrier
- Exemplify the Guiding Principles and promote them within the Sustainable Energies Group and CPP Investments

Deal Assessment and Relationship Management
- Build relationships across cultures/geographies, including with key advisors, partners, and management teams
- Assess relative value and risks, assisting deal teams in quickly analyzing and screening markets and investment opportunities
- Liaise with investment partners (other investors) and advisors (financial, industry specialists, etc.)
- At least one year of experience in investment banking or private equity, with exposure to sustainable energy investments/transactions being advantageous
- Intellectual curiosity and a passion for investing
- Strong research, financial modeling, analytical, and valuation skills
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-office (preferably global) matrix organization
- Strong interpersonal and business relationship skills
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written
