We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Superintendent to join our team at Algoma Central Corporation. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day technical operations of our vessels, ensuring compliance with company policies, government regulations, and customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities- Vessel Operations
- Provide direct support to vessels, ensuring safe and efficient operation of all engineering-related functions.
- Conduct vessel visits and inspections to ensure vessels are maintained and comply with all relevant standards.
- Monitor vessel efficiency and environmental performance, ensuring established KPIs are met.
- Eliminate downtime due to breakdowns and ensure continuous operation of assigned vessels.
- Maintenance
- Oversee maintenance and repair of vessels, ensuring all work is executed in accordance with Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
- Monitor and develop layup work specifications using ShipNet Layup Planner.
- Review all Ship-Out of Service (SOS) forms submitted by assigned vessels and ensure all SOS events are reported promptly.
- Prepare and supervise dry-docking and related surveys and inspections.
- Arrange and manage the work of shore-side contractors.
- Quality, Health, Safety, Environment & Regulatory
- Liaise with external authorities, including flag, class, and port state regulatory bodies.
- Review Shipboard Safety Management Committee meeting minutes.
- Lead or participate in internal audits on Company vessels.
- Lead or participate in the investigation of any occurrence, accident, or incident.
- Budgetary Control
- Prepare, monitor, and control budget for assigned vessels.
- Provide input to Fleet Plan.
- Coordinate efforts with Logistics and Purchasing departments to ensure required supplies/equipment are delivered to the ship in the most efficient way possible.
- People Management
- Work with Fleet Personnel department to schedule Chief Engineers and engineering officers, ensuring assignments meet regulatory and company standards.
- Input into vessel crewing and training requirements.
- Complete Performance Appraisals for Masters and Chief Engineers.
- Collaboration
- Liaise with Sales & Traffic department to identify customer service requirements.
- Collaborate with Logistics and Purchasing departments to ensure required supplies/equipment are delivered to the ship in the most efficient way possible.
- Participate as a member of Marine Emergency Response and the after-hours hotline.
- Post-secondary education in Maritime Studies, with a preference in Marine Engineering.
- Class One certificate of competency required.
- Minimum 1-3 years' experience with responsibilities consistent with this position preferred.
- A proven track record of success in technical and managerial positions with relevant maritime organizations.
- Sound knowledge of quality and regulatory disciplines (ISM/ISO), OCIMF regulations, and the ability to carry out investigations and analysis.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), organization, planning, and prioritization skills.
- Sound judgment, ability to balance business needs with the role of the employee advocate.
- A creative, enquiring, and logical mind.
- Ability to analyze and interpret technical information and drawings.
- Ability to lead and motivate groups and individuals.
- Strong project management skills.
- High degree of creativity and initiative, exhibiting strong troubleshooting skills.
- Valid passport and driver's license.
- No travel restrictions.
