Position: Registered Nurse
OverviewThe Atlantic Canada Poison Centre (ACPC) is dedicated to providing expert telephone guidance and management for pharmacological and non-pharmacological exposures. Our services extend to both the general public and healthcare professionals across the Atlantic provinces.
Key Responsibilities- Responding to and prioritizing incoming inquiries, collecting exposure histories, and evaluating toxicity severity using sound judgment and critical thinking.
- Implementing care plans based on established protocols, patient-specific details, available healthcare resources, and professional expertise.
- Communicating patient information and treatment suggestions to relevant healthcare facilities and providers as necessary.
- Assessing the appropriateness of evaluations and recommendations through established follow-up procedures.
- Providing initial crisis intervention for callers experiencing medical or drug-related emergencies, including suicidal intentions, and referring them to suitable community resources.
- Guiding the training and development of new staff and students, and engaging in research related to poisoning cases.
- Participating in committee work to support educational initiatives, quality improvement, and self-scheduling efforts.
- Collaborating with colleagues to achieve the objectives of the Centre.
Shifts are 11.25 hours in duration, covering various time slots including day and night rotations. Schedules are determined in accordance with self-scheduling guidelines.
Qualifications- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BScN) is required; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse in Nova Scotia is mandatory.
- Certification as a Specialist in Poison Information (CSSPI) is preferred.
- Experience in emergency or critical care nursing, particularly in poison information, is advantageous.
- Strong communication skills are essential, including public speaking and written communication.
- Extensive clinical experience in managing patients with poisoning and overdose is required.
- Solid understanding of pharmacology and medication calculations is necessary.
- Proficiency in computer systems and related technologies is required.
- Bilingualism in French and English is preferred.
