Job Overview
As a Senior Wetland Biologist at WEST Inc, you will play a pivotal role in conducting and overseeing a variety of tasks associated with wetland assessments and management. Your expertise will contribute to the sustainable development and conservation of wetland ecosystems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct and execute comprehensive tasks related to wetland delineations, classifications, impact evaluations, mitigation planning, permitting, and restoration monitoring.
- Prepare and finalize Wetland Assessment and Impact Reports (WAIR) and Wetland Assessment and Impact Forms (WAIF).
- Conduct fieldwork utilizing the ABWRET-A Tool and perform desktop assessments for ABWRET-D.
- Foster a culture of quality client service and teamwork while ensuring a respectful and positive work environment.
- Summarize and input data accurately.
- Mentor and guide junior and intermediate staff members.
- Provide reporting assistance as necessary, including compiling data, tables, figures, and report writing.
- Support various reports, surveys, and fieldwork activities as required.
- Manage projects for a diverse portfolio of clients, designing and implementing scientific consulting solutions.
- Draft reports that leverage scientific knowledge to present and interpret findings from field and desktop studies within their scientific and regulatory frameworks.
- Engage with clients to understand and address their needs.
- Oversee daily project administration.
- Collaborate with field staff to ensure effective execution of field studies.
- Prepare project proposals.
- Ensure quality assurance of collected data.
- Assist in conducting surveys related to vegetation, soils, watercourses, and wildlife as needed.
This role involves approximately 25% fieldwork and 75% office work, with travel between locations. The ratio of field to office work is negotiable. Fieldwork may require extended hours (8-12 hours) in varying weather conditions. Candidates should be prepared for challenges typical of rural environments, including driving in diverse conditions and working in remote areas with limited communication access.
Staff may work autonomously or in small teams and must effectively communicate and coordinate with site management and supervisors.
Qualifications:
- Eligibility to work in Canada (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or possess a valid work visa).
- A bachelor's degree or higher in biological sciences, environmental sciences, or a related field, along with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
- A valid driver's license with no restrictions.
- Expertise in wetland classification across boreal, parkland, and prairie habitats.
- Proficiency in Esri ArcGIS Pro, Desktop Suite, QGIS, and/or Google Earth.
- Ability to work long hours in the field and extended shifts as necessary.
- Capacity to navigate rugged terrain for extended periods.
- Strong interpersonal skills to engage positively with project managers, clients, and landowners.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Capability to meet deadlines and deliverables under pressure.
- Proficient in following protocols and working efficiently in both field and office settings.
- Critical thinking skills to address complex challenges.
- Wetland practitioner status or eligibility.
- P. Biol. or BIT designation or eligibility.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in wildlife surveys, water quality monitoring, or fisheries.
- Knowledge of soils and vegetation surveys.
Successful candidates must provide a driver's abstract that meets the company's criteria for vehicle operation and pass a drug and alcohol test. Adherence to health and safety standards is mandatory throughout employment.
