Position Overview

Legal Aid Ontario is seeking a dedicated and experienced lawyer to provide essential duty counsel services. This role involves delivering legal support both remotely and in-person, catering to a diverse clientele facing criminal charges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality legal representation in a cost-effective manner.
  • Advocate for clients during bail hearings, guilty pleas, and remands, both in-person and virtually.
  • Engage in proactive advocacy for clients experiencing mental health challenges, poverty, and systemic discrimination.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders, including detention center personnel, law enforcement, Crown Attorneys, and community organizations.
  • Assist self-represented individuals charged with criminal or quasi-criminal offenses.
  • Evaluate client needs to facilitate referrals to appropriate community resources.
  • Provide legal guidance to clients in custody or awaiting trial.
  • Represent clients in specialized courts as necessary.
  • Maintain current knowledge of criminal law and relevant practices.
  • Ensure timely management of case files and documentation.
  • Adapt to evolving circumstances within the legal environment.
  • Identify and communicate potential risks to the organization.
  • Facilitate knowledge-sharing and best practices among colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Criminal Code of Canada and related legal frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience in criminal law with strong advocacy skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with marginalized populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in relevant legal software and Microsoft 365 applications.

Preferred Attributes

  • Significant courtroom experience in criminal law.
  • Strong interviewing skills to identify vulnerable clients.
  • Commitment to social justice and equity in legal representation.
  • Fluency in French or other languages is an asset.
