Position Overview
Legal Aid Ontario is seeking a dedicated professional to provide essential duty counsel services in criminal law. This role involves offering legal support both remotely and in-person, catering to clients with diverse and complex needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality legal assistance efficiently and effectively.
- Represent clients during bail hearings, guilty pleas, and remands, utilizing both in-person and remote methods.
- Advocate for clients facing challenges such as mental health issues, poverty, and systemic discrimination.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders, including detention center personnel, law enforcement, Crown Attorneys, and community organizations.
- Assist self-represented individuals in navigating criminal or quasi-criminal cases.
- Evaluate client needs to facilitate appropriate referrals to community services.
- Provide legal guidance to clients, whether in custody or not.
- Represent clients in specialized courts as necessary.
- Engage in pre-trial negotiations with the Crown when suitable.
- Maintain current knowledge of criminal law and practices.
- Ensure timely and accurate management of case files in accordance with organizational standards.
- Collect data and document services rendered in a timely manner.
- Adapt to changes in a dynamic work environment.
- Identify and communicate potential risks to the organization.
- Attend court proceedings punctually to fulfill daily responsibilities.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing and best practices among colleagues.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be a lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Comprehensive understanding of the Rules of Professional Conduct.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant criminal legislation and legal procedures.
- Experience in criminal law with strong advocacy skills.
- Proven ability to work with marginalized and vulnerable populations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Familiarity with legal technology and software.
- Commitment to social justice and equity.
