Role Overview

The primary responsibility of a manufacturing controls engineer is to enhance production operations through analysis of bottlenecks, investigation of equipment downtime causes, and execution of continuous improvement projects. These initiatives aim to boost equipment uptime, improve process efficiency, and ensure error-proof assembly processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Foster a proactive safety culture by involving team members in safety initiatives.
  • Utilize the Global Manufacturing System effectively.
  • Support daily production operations with an emphasis on personnel and equipment safety, process quality, and uptime, focusing on automation and controls.
  • Provide technical support to production and maintenance teams for troubleshooting equipment/process failures and implementing effective solutions.
  • Identify and lead projects that align with departmental objectives and promote continuous improvement in safety, quality, cost, and reliability.
  • Monitor equipment performance and reliability, developing tracking methods as necessary.
  • Initiate special projects aimed at process and quality enhancements, equipment upgrades, and increasing production rates.
  • Ensure compliance of new and existing equipment with operational standards and requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation (drawings, manuals, PM schedules, etc.) for all equipment in the assigned area, ensuring spare parts availability and developing maintenance standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Stay updated on advancements in relevant fields.
  • Communicate current status and emerging trends in equipment standards and legislative requirements to management.
  • Identify opportunities for technical training and knowledge sharing with other Controls Engineers, Interns, and Maintenance Associates.
  • Design and manage strategic interfaces within systems to promote component reuse and adherence to best practices.
  • Assist other specialists in conducting root cause analysis.
  • Develop tests to efficiently identify opportunities for design enhancements.
  • Document system vulnerabilities and create mitigation plans; track corrective actions.

Requirements

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • 2 - 4 years of experience in controls and automation, preferably in the automotive sector.
  • Proficient in programmable machine controls hardware and software applications.
  • Skilled in PLC programming and troubleshooting.
  • Experienced in developing and configuring HMI software.
  • Knowledgeable about conveyors, welding, and robotics (specifically Fanuc).
  • Familiar with basic electrical and safety standards.
  • Ability to supervise effectively.
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills, capable of implementing solutions to ensure safe and efficient equipment operation.
  • Creative, disciplined, and responsible with a commitment to delivering results on schedule.
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong problem-solving ability.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Certification in GM Controls Standards through completion of GCCS2/GCCH1 training.

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field; a college diploma may also be considered.
