About Nasittuq:
Nasittuq is dedicated to providing Operation & Maintenance services for the North Warning System (NWS), a collaborative early-warning radar network established by Canada and the United States, featuring 47 sites across Northern Canada.
Position Overview:
The Environmental Compliance Specialist will assist the Environmental Services Officer in implementing, managing, and overseeing initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable environmental practices within the North Warning System, while fostering environmental consciousness among Nasittuq personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Environmental Services Officer in ensuring adherence to all relevant federal, provincial, and territorial environmental regulations.
- Develop and maintain an Environmental Management System that aligns with ISO 14000 standards.
- Act as a liaison with environmental authorities, including Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Nunavut Water Board, representing Nasittuq's interests.
- Manage licenses issued by the Nunavut Water Board.
- Document and report any environmental spills or incidents.
- Create and uphold a Corporate Environmental Protection Plan for the NWS.
- Supervise annual environmental inspections at NWS sites, ensuring reports are generated and recommendations are implemented.
- Design and deliver environmental training programs for Nasittuq staff, including topics such as Environmental Awareness and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG).
- Evaluate engineering plans for environmental compliance.
- Coordinate investigations of spills, compile reports, and suggest corrective measures as necessary.
- Prepare monthly summaries regarding environmental occurrences.
- Engage in continuous improvement initiatives as required.
- Oversee the remediation of contaminated sites.
- Perform additional tasks and projects as assigned to support Nasittuq's overall objectives.
Qualifications:
- A post-secondary degree or diploma in Environmental Sciences or a related discipline.
Certifications:
- Certification as a Canadian Environmental Practitioner or eligibility for such designation.
- Ability to obtain Secret Security Clearance.
Experience:
- 1-3 years of experience in environmental technology services.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Familiarity with ISO 14001 standards and certification processes.
Competencies:
- Proficient in MS Office applications with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and documentation abilities.
- Flexibility in working hours and availability for incident response.
- Commitment to confidentiality and ethical practices.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively influence and guide stakeholders.
- Ability to manage priorities with attention to detail in a cross-cultural environment.
- Proven capability to perform well under pressure and in crisis situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in Arctic environments.
- Willingness to travel and work in remote locations for extended periods.
- Comfort with rotary wing travel.
- Completion of Cultural Awareness Training.
