Job Overview

Responsibilities:

The position entails assisting projects under the supervision of the QS Team Lead, with a focus on construction progress and performance evaluation. The ideal candidate should possess a solid understanding of the heavy construction sector and have experience in progress assessment and quantity verification. They will offer guidance on the construction workflow, emphasizing risk management and opportunities, while collaborating with various project teams. While a Quantity Surveyor is preferred, candidates with backgrounds in Estimating or Construction Management, particularly those with experience in large-scale, intricate projects, are also encouraged to apply.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conducts on-site physical progress assessments, including verification and validation of quantities.
  • Prepares and submits interim valuations.
  • Manages, assesses, and certifies variations/change orders.
  • Identifies potential risks and evaluates control options.
  • Completes internal and external reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborates closely with field personnel and contractors.
  • Enhances the progress measurement process on-site.
  • Establishes Rules of Credit for each sub-component.
  • Develops systems for progress reporting.
  • Administers and coordinates all types of construction and development projects, including contracts and sub-contracts, construction progress schedules, cost control systems, and work measurements.
  • Provides strategic advice on construction costs and planning to management and other project stakeholders.
  • Interprets tender documents, specifications, general conditions, and other contractual areas.
  • Prepares and submits estimates for construction and development work.
  • Researches, negotiates, and supports dispute resolution activities.
  • Understands and contributes to the engineering and commercial aspects of multiple sub-projects.
  • Offers advice on contractual claims and negotiations.
  • Monitors compliance with contract requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or Business Administration.
  • PQS (Professional Quantity Surveyor) designation is preferred, or the willingness and capability to obtain it; active membership in CIQS (Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveying) or RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors).
  • A degree in Engineering such as Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering will also be considered.
  • A minimum of 3 to 8 years of progressive experience in managing large capital projects, including hands-on involvement in major infrastructure projects, ideally in a Quantity Surveying, Estimating, or Construction Management role, or 10+ years in a senior capacity.
  • Preferred experience in Database Management.
  • Familiarity with the planning and design of equipment/material procurement and construction processes necessary for delivering major capital projects.
  • Expertise in construction costs and contracts.
  • Strong business and market insight related to the construction industry.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and leadership abilities. Capable of inspiring trust in challenging situations and adeptly navigating ambiguity.

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to comprehend multi-discipline design concepts from construction drawings.
  • Ability to foster effective communication within a multi-discipline team (safety, environmental, regulatory, geotechnical, civil-structural, electrical, and mechanical).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and SharePoint.
  • Experience on-site would be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Scheduling Software (P6, Microsoft Project), BIM, Revit, or other 3D Visualization Software would be beneficial.
  • Prior field project management or construction experience.
  • Previous experience with Earned Value Management would be an asset.
  • Strong data collection and analytical capabilities.
