Summary

Under the supervision of the Patient Care Manager, the Registered Nurse in Critical Care is responsible for assessing, identifying, planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing care necessary to support patients in fulfilling their physical, social, spiritual, and psychological needs through a structured nursing practice framework.

The nurse develops, implements, assesses, and modifies care plans as needed. This role includes individual and group education as part of the care plan and making referrals to other resources when necessary. The Registered Nurse collaborates with other nursing and healthcare professionals by sharing knowledge and demonstrating procedures.

The Registered Nurse operates within a multidisciplinary clinical framework in alignment with the BCCNM Standards of Practice, as well as the mission, vision, values, and established protocols of Providence Health Care.

Qualifications / Skills and Education

Education

Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, or in Residential Care and Mental Health, or current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives.


Completion of a postgraduate critical care course, or two years of recent experience in a similar environment.

Skills and Abilities

Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written.

Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) relevant to the service area.

Capacity to function effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Strong decision-making and analytical skills.

Ability to interact effectively with others.

Competence in modeling conflict resolution strategies.

Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

Proficiency in prioritizing and organizing tasks.

Skill in operating related equipment.

Ability to educate and assess patient learning needs.

Capability to lead patient and family group sessions.

Ability to provide clinical guidance.

Responsibilities

Evaluates patient status through various methods including chart reviews, patient observations, interviews with patients and families, completion of questionnaires, and consultations with peers and other healthcare team members.


Assesses patient needs, plans, implements, evaluates, and prioritizes nursing care and interventions, developing care plans based on clinical judgment and evidence-based practices.

Delivers nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures, technologies, and standards of Providence Health Care.

Monitors patient progress, evaluates outcomes, reassesses when goals are unmet, and adjusts care plans accordingly.

Documents observations and communicates any changes in patient condition to the appropriate staff.

Provides direct nursing interventions in crisis and life-threatening situations.


Maintains accurate documentation including assessments, care plans, patient status, and discharge plans in both manual and computerized systems.

Accompanies patients during medical transport as required.


Identifies and addresses patient and family educational needs, provides relevant materials, and incorporates teaching activities into care plans and interventions, as well as making referrals to other resources.

Facilitates group sessions for patients and families as needed and guides them in developing and maintaining health-promoting behaviors.


Offers direction to other staff members such as Care Attendants and Licensed Practical Nurses regarding patient care and fosters effective teamwork.

Responsibilities include collegial sharing of information, demonstrating and guiding related tasks, providing feedback on staff performance, ensuring staff are aware of their assignments, and reallocating clinical tasks as necessary.


Participates in nursing orientation and shares clinical expertise with nursing staff, students, and other interdisciplinary team members.

Engages in and attends in-service training and other educational programs as required.


Involves in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care policies, procedures, educational materials, and best practices through participation in quality improvement activities, nursing practice councils, clinical pathway development, research, and education committees.


Supports nursing research by identifying potential clinical research projects, adapting research findings to practice, and participating in research activities to enhance nursing practice.

Facilitates discharge planning and collaborates with families and community resource agencies.


Advocates for patients to uphold their rights to dignity, respect, privacy, confidentiality, autonomy, and access to information.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
