The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) plays a crucial role in supporting students, families, and educational staff by providing expert assessment, intervention, and programming for individuals facing communicative disorders and challenges in literacy, behavior, and language acquisition.
Key Qualifications and Skills:
- Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology or Communication Disorders or an equivalent advanced degree;
- Eligibility for certification from the relevant professional regulatory body;
- Experience with Assistive Technology and early literacy development;
- A valid driver's license.
Core Responsibilities:
- The SLP must demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment, showcasing flexibility and adaptability to diverse educational settings;
- A comprehensive understanding of Inclusion and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is essential, as the SLP will provide support across all tiers using evidence-based methodologies;
- Competency in addressing various speech and language disorders, including but not limited to articulation, phonological, voice, fluency, and hearing disorders, as well as dysphagia, is required;
- The SLP will actively participate in school-based teams, contributing to student planning and teaching support through assessment, direct therapy, and consultation with families and educators regarding student progress and developmental concerns;
- Consideration of diversity issues, including social dialects and potential biases in assessment materials, is critical in service delivery;
- The SLP's responsibilities encompass prevention, consultation, assessment, intervention, and ongoing professional development and research.
