Position Overview

Role: Senior Director of Enterprise Data Governance

The Chief Data Office (CDO) serves as a pivotal function that facilitates the execution of essential data governance and management initiatives. This office plays a crucial role in shaping the data strategy of the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) and influences strategic investments in data to align with business objectives and regulatory requirements. This senior director role is integral to leading Enterprise Data Governance within the CDO, reporting directly to the VP of Shared Data Management Services & Governance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive data governance strategy to ensure effective and efficient data risk management practices across RBC on a global scale.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the CDO and the second line of defense, reviewing existing data management policies and standards while synthesizing regulatory developments and industry trends to identify gaps and recommend enhancements.
  • Collaborate with compliance teams to evaluate and communicate the implications of new regulations on enterprise data functions and data provisioning strategies.
  • Lead and manage enterprise data remediation initiatives in collaboration with both business and technology stakeholders.
  • Establish and disseminate CDO procedures and guidelines to ensure uniform execution of data governance and risk management across RBC.
  • Oversee the effectiveness of CDO governance controls and lead risk and control self-assessment activities, continuously identifying areas for improvement.
  • Represent CDO Data Governance across various risk domains, including Privacy, AI, Compliance, and Model Risk, and work with partners to enhance RBC's maturity in these areas.
  • Define and prioritize governance requirements for investments in data management automation.
  • Serve as a key contact for regulatory, compliance, and audit matters related to data, providing insights on data risk management strategies.
  • Collaborate with data-related functions, privacy, security, and IT to drive the strategic management and control of data, aligning on standards and methodologies.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in data management within the financial services sector.
  • At least 8 years of experience in data governance and management.
  • 2-4 years of experience in risk management or governance within a financial institution.
  • 2 years of experience in developing strategic initiatives.
  • 2 years of experience in managing teams.
  • Proven experience in implementing enterprise-wide risk programs.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory and legislative frameworks.
  • Experience in project management, including planning, execution, and reporting.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and team facilitation abilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Canadian and US regulatory reporting standards, including BCBS 239, OCC Heightened Banking Standards, IFRS, and CCAR.
