Role Overview
Reporting to the Managing Director of Listed Sustainable Energy, the Analyst is responsible for supporting the Listed Sustainable Energies team in identifying, evaluating, and analyzing public energy investment opportunities. The global mandate encompasses investments in both traditional and renewable energy sectors.
The primary objective of the Listed SEG program is to enhance the risk and return profile of CPP Investments' overall SEG portfolio. This will be accomplished through two main strategies: gaining exposure to sectors or regions that are underrepresented in the SEG portfolio and investing in situations where a desired SEG exposure is fundamentally more cost-effective in the public market compared to the private market.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research, analysis, underwriting, and evaluation of various potential listed energy investment opportunities
- Compile industry, market, and asset-level data along with financial information
- Develop complex dynamic financial models to assess investment opportunities, reviewing investment structures and specific assets using financial models and various quantitative analytical tools to test assumptions and sensitivities
- Assist in preparing and presenting Investment Committee memoranda; participate in Investment Committee discussions
- Engage in monitoring and managing the investment portfolio through formal semi-annual reviews and other informal meetings
- Compile necessary data and financial information to assist in managing the listed energy portfolio
- Benchmark investment performance and prepare reports for senior management
- Collaborate seamlessly with the listed real assets, strategy, and private asset teams, ensuring knowledge sharing and strong working relationships
- Work collaboratively with teams in credit, public equities, and other business areas as appropriate
- Exhibit willingness and interest in working across multiple energy sectors and geographies
- Perform other relevant duties and projects as assigned
- Up to three years of relevant experience in the energy and renewables sector; prior experience in public energy and/or renewables is preferred
- Relevant experience may include asset management, valuation, investment banking, equity research, or similar; strong accounting knowledge is advantageous
- Experience in developed and emerging markets is of interest
- Undergraduate degree in business, finance, or economics – B.A., B.S., or equivalent
- CPA, CFA, or CFA Candidate status is advantageous
- Strong quantitative, financial, and analytical skills (DCF and financial modeling)
- Knowledge of the listed energy sector, including key subsectors such as power and renewables, energy midstream, commodities and alternative fuels, and distributed energy and services; global or multi-regional experience preferred
- Solid understanding of MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint), Bloomberg, Capital IQ, and other financial data portals
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build working relationships internally and externally
- Multilingualism may be advantageous
- Ability to apply consistent investment judgment and discern what is important
