Position Overview

Douglas College is seeking a dedicated Student Assistant to support the planning and execution of programs aimed at facilitating the transition for new students. This role is essential in creating a welcoming environment for incoming students through various initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the organization and delivery of transition programs on campus, particularly the First Year Fridays.
  • Collaborate with the Student Life Communications Team to design and produce promotional materials.
  • Contribute to the development and presentation of educational content for First Year Fridays and related activities.
  • Help plan, facilitate, and assess events and activities.
  • Engage in weekly meetings with the Student Life Coordinator.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and welcoming atmosphere for all event participants.
Qualifications for Success
  • Availability to attend First Year Friday events on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Ability to handle challenges with maturity and thoughtful consideration.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, responsible, professional, and adaptable.
  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Open-mindedness towards diverse cultures, practices, and sexual orientations.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to inclusion and cultural sensitivity towards the unique challenges faced by diverse student populations.
  • Previous experience as a volunteer or leader for orientation programs is preferred.
  • Flexibility to work at different campuses as needed.
  • Basic proficiency in Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.
  • Experience in event planning and leadership roles is desirable.
Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the position, domestic students must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Enrolled in a minimum of one (3 credit) course at Douglas College during the work term.
  2. Previously enrolled in a minimum of one (3 credit) course at Douglas College in the term before the work term and intend to enroll in the following term.
  3. Enrolled in at least two (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. during the work term.
  4. Previously enrolled in at least two (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. in the term before the work term and intend to enroll in the following term.

International students must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College throughout the academic year.
  2. International students at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. with a valid Study Permit that allows employment, must provide proof of full-time enrollment.

Before commencing work, students must provide an original copy of their Social Insurance Number (SIN) and Study Permit as required by law.
